Savoca Arts and Crafts
The demonstration takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the third week of August. Scene of the consolidated open market is the evocative setting of the historical centre.
Along the peculiar alleys of the ancient village you can admire Sicilian and local typical handicraft exhibitors and practical demonstrations of old crafts and/or ancient Savoca valley’s traditional materials processing, that today are very rare or fading away.
Wrought iron, ceramics, terracottas, peculiar and unique stone and wooden street and household furniture, and many other articles represent a unique to don’t miss for the thousands of visitors crowding the hilly town in these three days.
The last side of the sample shows some gastronomic stands where you can taste local specialities like “salsiccia al ceppo” (sausages), fresh bread seasoned with local olive-oil, lemon roulades, and many others.
Contemporary to the open market there are photography and art exhibitions, arranged on the quaint artistic steps (dedicated to the director F. F. Coppola) or in the “Maria SS. Immacolata” philharmonic centre, and the ethnical music shows, strictly connected to Sicilian and local traditions. After all, generally on Saturday, some musical troupes in typical folk costume perform, wandering through the alleys of the historical centre.
Savoca Tastes
Open market of the gastronomic handicrafts with tasting of typical and local products, the manifestation occurs on Saturday and Sunday of the second week of November
(excepting when these days occur at the same time with the celebrations of S. Martino; in this case the manifestation is extended to the next week).
The open market takes place in the centre of the hamlet of “S. Francesco di Paola”, that on the occasion becomes a real gastronomic workshop where you can taste roast sucking-pig on the spit, sausage, salami, home-made bread and macaroni, typical sweets, extra virgin olive-oil, wine, chestnuts, mushrooms, and many other exquisitenesses of Agrò’s Valley.
The products are rigorously selected and prepared according to the traditional local procedures. The visitors can admire the processing and the cooking of the roast sucking-pig on the block, macaroni and the local “cuzzola” (fried dough).
Contemporary to the open market there are cultural meetings about , for example, oenological and gastronomic subjects, and characteristic musical exhibitions like the ancient “cantastorie” (ballad-singers) playing the so-called “canzuni” (ancient songs).
The Passion of Christ
On Wednesday and Saturday of the Easter-week, along the ancient streets of the evocative medieval village, where there are medieval stations of the Way of the Cross hollowed out in the rock, takes place a spectacular representation of the Passion of Christ, with epocally costumes.
The Way of the Cross occurs on Good Friday from times ago, starting from Capuchin’s Monastery and ending on the top of mount Calvario.
